NASCAR license plate on getaway car trips up robber
Robert Coulson Lavery, who had smeared drywall compound on his face to disguise his appearance during a bank robbery, was convicted Wednesday in York County court.
Lavery, 56, and Robert Steven Miller, 53, were both charged in the Nov. 24, 2006, holdup of the New Cumberland Federal Credit Union in Fairview Township.
According to Fairview Township Police, Lavery entered the building at 345 Lewisberry Road and left with $7,910. Miller drove the getaway car, a black Chevrolet Malibu with a Rusty Wallace NASCAR plate on the front.
Investigators received a tip from someone who was familiar with the car and were directed to Miller. Miller confessed to assisting Lavery in the bank robbery, police said.
Lavery was arrested at Miller's residence by Harrisburg City Police two days after the robbery. Police found clothing and a baseball cap with smears of drywall compound, $3,775 in cash and also found compound in the passenger side of the Malibu.
Miller pleaded guilty to robbery and theft by unlawful taking in October. He is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 23.
A jury convicted Lavery on Wednesday of robbery, theft by unlawful taking and criminal conspiracy. He was acquitted of robbery by threat of imminent bodily injury. He is scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 25.
